Bio:
Portia Holmes a brilliant young freshman of To-Oh University. She was born June third of 1989 to her parents Leslie and Glen Holmes. She was originally born in Washington of the USA, but recently moved to Japan. Her mother and father are both in the FBI, and her sister, Alexandria goes to Daikoku Private Academy. Now, Portia is by no means an average student. Due to a stroke Desiree had three months before her birth, Portia has Cerebral Palsy** and has to use a wheelchair all the time. (See note below for explanation.) Despite her hardships that come along with being physically disabled, she is an optimistic go-getter with an interesting sense of humor and great intellect. However, Portia's relationship with her parents (but namely her mother) is far from good. Because of her pronounced dependence on her parents, she finds herself having less rights than most young adults do. Both Desiree and her mom, have strong opinion of what she can and cannot do, and they often have ongoing arguments. When Portia is not arguing with her mother, she is often getting lectured to by her. Over the years, Portia has developed a strategy to avoid conflicts with her mom. To put her strategy in simple words: "Keep your mouth shut and don't get caught." For the most part, Portia abides by this strategy and keeps her turmoil locked away in her mind.
In recent weeks, Portia has come to the conclusion that she genuinely despises her mother, and that nothing would make her happier that to have the "sadistic mantis of a mother" hit by a semi-truck. A shinigami, named Kron has been watching over Portia for a few months now and has grown quite fond of her. So much so, that he purposely drops his Death Note right into her lap, just so she is able to see and hear him. Portia confides in Kron her secret and ever growing hatred towards her own mother, while he reveals the secrets of the Death Note to her. However, when offered the opportunity to kill of the person she hates most, Portia refuses to have her mother's name written in the book, saying that she is still to reliant on her mother for her to die just yet. However the power of the Death Note is able to keep her amused and in high spirits. Going under the alias of "Ripa"(the Japanese katakana for "reaper") she too earns the rank of killer, like Kira, whom she supports. Also like Kira, she only kills criminals both minor and major, however instead of local criminals, she is spending most of her time on North American ones. She is doing this to bide her time (and hopefully lead L away from Kira), awaiting the day she can finally move out and kill her mother. Meanwhile her parents are totally oblivious to occupied in solving the Ripa & Kira cases.
**Cerebral Palsy and Spastic Quadriplegia
Portia was born with a disability commonly known as Cerebral Palsy, and better known as CP. CP comes in many varieties (categorized by how many parts the individual's body is affected), and ranges from mild to severe. Portia was diagnosed with severe spastic quadriplegia at the age of 9 months, even though the symptoms were apparent since birth. Spastic Quadriplegia is a form of Cerebral Palsy in which all four limbs are affected. Portia's arms/hands are somewhat functional as are her legs (but the legs are far less so), though the range of motion is limited. It is usually accompanied by more severe motor dysfunction than the other forms. With Spastic Quadriplegia, there are often additional complications having to do with eating and breathing due to the lack of muscle control or the inability of muscles to work together in the normal patterns or rhythms of contraction. Fortunately with Portia, this is very mild. With eating, she only chokes/gags on the rare occasion if the food gets stuck on the roof of her mouth or in the back of her throat. She is usually able to dislodge the food on her own.
As far as breathing goes, it isn't really any problem. Other physical symptoms/complications of spastic quadriplegia that Portia displays include: the inability to walk even with assistance or equipment (IE. Crutches, canes, walkers, etc), general stiffness/abnormal muscle-tone, impaired motor skills, and bladder/bowel dysfunction. Portia does have about 85% control over her bladder/bowels, but an involuntary spasm will make them leak, or retain their contents, but this doesn't happen regularly.
The incidence of mental retardation is higher for children with spastic quadriplegia, but one in eight children with spastic quadriplegia have no mental problems at all. Portia is one of that lucky one in eight.
